I have to start out by saying that I am sorry for not writing last week. We all have been standing firm in the face of the battle. Life has been very intense here the last two weeks. Please pray for the protection of Jesus Christ over Glenhaven.

Praise God for the wonderful baptism service for Justin.

Praise God for a successful GYR Yard Sale this year, it was last week.

Pray that our students will focus on their studies and finish school.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. John 1:1-5

I would like to ask us all to begin to focus specifically on Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, specifically because Easter is coming soon. Concentrate on what He has done for us and how we can best communicate His sacrifice to our kids. How do we continually teach them to love Him?
Please pray that each resident will settle back into the routine at the Ranch. Most residents have returned from visits home last week, while some others did not get to leave the Ranch.

Continue to pray for our finances and the stewardship of everyone on staff. We do need the funds to get the green house up and running and to hire the Chamberlains as house-parents for that house. This is what we would like to do:

First=remodel the green house kitchen, install new flooring, and change the electrical connection to an underground one.

Second=eventually add a bathroom and a resident instructor suite.

Praying for Our Staff

So it came about when Moses held his hand up, that Israel prevailed, and when he let his hand down, Amalek prevailed. But Moses’ hands were heavy. Then they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other. Thus his hands were steady until the sun set. So Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. Exodus 17:11-13

I have been thinking and praying for the staff here recently and how they are each suited for their particular job. It is amazing to see how God has placed each one of us here for a specific purpose. Moses had to hold up his hands. Aaron and Hur had to assist him. Joshua had to lead the troops into battle and many others had to fight. Everyone had a job to do. Most of the staff here do many different jobs. They are incredibly skilled and God allows us to work in all of those skill areas.

This week I would like to ask you to focus on our school staff:

In the sixth chapter of John's gospel Jesus says some hard things for His followers to understand. These things were so difficult that many who were following Him turned away. I often wonder if things will ever get to difficult for those here at the Ranch, so difficult that they will want to turn away.

We do have an awesome staff. Their love and concern for each other and for the kids is an amazing thing to watch. So I don't really have a reason for thinking about this. I think the Lord is just saying stay diligent my friend, stay close to me, and I will lead your people. I am gone alot these days, telling people about Glenhaven.

Say a prayer this week for the diligence of each and every staff member as we each seek the face of our Lord.

Continue to pray for our finances and the stewardship of everyone on staff. We are forever trusting in the provision of God. The other day a board member was looking at the finances and exclaimed, "This is truly a miracle", when he realized where we were at and how the Lord had provided. God is so Good!

Why are finances so CRITICAL? without the necessary funds we cannot help more kids. Right now we have house-parents wanting to be here. We could help 6-7 more teens, but without funds we cannot do the necessary work to fix up the house or pay the salaries for new staff. My heart breaks for the kids that we must turn away.

Scott and Christina accompanied Karen and I this past week as we attended the Mid-South Home School convention in Memphis, TN. Please pray for the lives that we were able to touch.

Waiting on the provision of God is always an exciting thing. Today we have enough money for payroll and most of our current bills are paid. But we literally have nothing else. Nothing to put our trust in. No place to look and say, "That is where our hope lies." Except...Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It is Jesus that we live for. It is Jesus that we love, and in Him alone we will trust.

Know this: "Your prayers for Glenhaven are being answered!"

So keep up the good work. We cannot let Satan triumph this day or any day. Remind him that he has been defeated! He cannot have the lives of our kids. God will be glorified at Glenhaven and in the lives of its staff and supporters.

We have all become still before our Heavenly Father as He continues to stretch our faith. February has been very difficult financially. February has been difficult for dealing with our teens. We are all feeling the effects of the angelic conflict as it swirls around us. We know this is a spiritual issue. We are literally at the gates of hell rescuing souls from the enemy. It seems he has noticed. We will all gather around the throne of God, listen to His voice, and He will be glorified by what we do and say. God will be glorified when our help comes, because it comes from the Lord.

We are all making deep cut into our salaries and non-essential spending has ceased.

Glenhaven's Prayer Concerns - from Director Dwayne Webb

There are three things that remain—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13:13 TLB

If we relied on luck this would probably be the verse to avoid, "13:13, but you know what we do not live our lives by superstition. We live by Faith. Paul is talking about the three things that remain when we meet Jesus. When we are face to face and we are beginning to know Him these three things will be there, faith, hope, & love.

Think about it, when He wipes away all tears from our eyes, and there will be no more death, or sorrow, or crying, or pain. When all of that has gone forever. We will still have faith, hope, & love. God is Awesome!

In chapter 5, verse 23 of 1st Thessalonians the Apostle Paul speaks a blessing to the church body as he closes his letter. I wonder why we don't do that? I do think that we should. I think it is a part of getting involved in the lives of our fellow believers. Paul talks alot about how this church invested in his life and how he poured back into them from his own life. Thank you for blessing us and pouiring your life into ours.

May the God of peace himself make you entirely pure and devoted to God; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept strong and blameless until that day when our Lord Jesus Christ comes back again. 1 Thess 5:23 TLB

Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, Romans 1:1

Have you ever thought about being set apart for the gospel of God? Because alot of what we hear today is about our personal sanctification, about God healing our hearts, and how we can grow in Christ, personally. While all of that is true we do not hear much about being sold out for the gospel of God. Oswald Chambers in his devotional book, My Utmost for His Highest, January 31 says, "It is our abiding reality."

Please pray this week that the gospel of God become Glenhaven's abiding reality. Like so many in ministry we too get caught up in the service. There is always too much to do and not enough money or people. So we often get stuck in the worry and business that goes with ministry. Pray that our reality will always stay at the cross of Christ.

With all the work on the gray house most of the residents are just a bit unsettled. The boys are still eating meals here at the green house and sleeping at Hidden Valley. The girls are unsure about the boys moving over here. New things are always unsettling for everyone.
Pray for the house-parents as they maintain a calmness in the midst of the chaos.
School staff as they keep on teaching in spite of all of this.

To Those Praying For Us

But when God, who had set me apart even from my mother’s womb and called me through His grace, was pleased to reveal His Son in me so that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, ... Galatians 1:15-16

That always sounds great to us when we read it. We focus on being called and set apart. It all makes us feel kind of special and yes we are special. We are called, "children of God" and that is awesome.
Then we have days like the one we are having today at Glenhaven. There are several students and one teacher down here in the office and we are trying to figure out why they are all so upset. So I ask myself, "Do you feel special now!" Yes we do feel special, because we trust the one who called us to His ministry.
Please pray that John Cunningham, Christina Manuwai, and the school staff thrive today in the school.
Please pray that God will be glorified in the middle of this "Monday".

We are all still working to finish the remodel on the gray house. We have had many people working up there the past week. Volunteers from Hot Springs Village and Teen Challenge of Hot Springs. We have been blessed.
Please pray for everyone working on the house.
Their safety and stamina.
Especially, Scott Manuwai, because he is still trying to take care of the rest of the Ranch
Pray for the boys that they will continue to grow and thrive in the turmoil.

Wow, to be there with Jesus, listening to the parables, and hearing the explanation. I often think of just how good that would be. Then I remember that I have that chance everyday as I read His Word. So I think, "Am I able to hear?" Do I listen for that still, small voice?
Please pray that all of us here will be listening for that voice.
That we will keep our lives buried in His Word.
And that we will each be able to hear.

We are all working ferociously to finish the remodel on the gray house. Pam and Brian Fields live there right now, but the boys are still sleeping at Hidden Valley.
Please pray for everyone working on the house.
Their safety and stamina.

Sometimes it's like walking through a mine field as they must sort through an ocean of emotions just just to get to the real problem. The hurt and pain that has been inflicted just seems too big at times.

Ranch Intercessors

We welcomed all the residents back yesterday. We started school today. We are moving forward excited about what the Lord is doing here.

The Hardings have resigned as house-parents. They will be moving to Tennessee to take care of a piece of property for a missionary. We wish them the God's blessings as they leave us.

The Fields will be becoming house-parents sooner than expected. Please pray for them. We will need to move the boys from Hidden Valley.

In order to do that the gray house needs to be finished. We have been remodeling it. Please pray that we will be able to finish that house soon.

Alarm systems will be required for both houses.

And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!” But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.” Luke 1:26-33 NKJV

Christmas can be the busiest and most hurried time if we are not careful. So while you are in the middle of your decorating, cooking, buying, and wrapping, STOP, just for a moment. Relax and let your mind rest, on the one who provides rest for our souls, that is Jesus Christ, our Savior.

Remember the residents especially these next few weeks. While everyone is thinking delightful thoughts about sugar-plum fairies, many of our kids are reminded of what they do not have, not stuff, but genuine family. Please pray that they will be able to focus on the family that they do have. Whether that is here at GYR or the family at home.

Brittney - graduates on December 7th.
Several of the older girls are dealing with the stress of the newer and/or younger residents that they have to live with. Sometimes we forget that we were once in their shoes.
The boys have been working very hard to catch the girls in their barn chores. While the girls did get the house trophy again this month, several of the boys placed in the top three. I think your prayers are really paying off for them. They each seem to be settling in and working hard to accomplish what needs to be done.

Pray for rest during the Christmas season for all of our HP's. Pray that the Lord will fill them with Fresh Wind and Fresh Fire for their ministry and for the kids that they call their own. We have been asking you to pray for our finances and it would appear that you have been doing just that. Yesterday the Lord provided what we needed. So today we are singing our praises a little louder. I for one am breathing a sigh of relief, even as I think, God is Good.

Our 25th anniversary open-house was awesome. It was so great to see everyone. Jody Brown, founder of Glenhaven, was here. He shared with us about the early days and how Glenhaven came to be.

HOUSE-PARENTS - We have hired a couple Brian and Pam to train as house-parents. Brian and Pam have had an offer on their house. They made a counter offer. Now they are waiting for a response. Please continue to pray for this process.
We still need two other couples to fill all of our houses with kids.

Wow! What a great day we had on Saturday. If you missed it know that we missed you. And if you were here thank you for coming. We were honored to have Jody Brown here he talked to us about what it was like in the early days when he, his wife Cindy, and their two kids, Dana and Joey, first came to Glenhaven. Dana also shared with us some of her fond memories of the old days.

We were also honored by the presence of former residents, former staff members, and a host of GYR friends and volunteers. We worshiped the Lord together. We ate together. And each of our staff got to share about what they do to impact the lives of our kids during the open house.

It was a great day. I would like to mention a couple of people by way of saying THANKS to them. Scott Manuwai, operations manager, and Warren Granberry for their wonderful work preparing the property. It was beautiful out here, thanks. Candy Davids for her hard work in the kitchen. The food was wonderful, thank you. Many people served and cleaned and straightened stuff, thank you to all. Finally thank you Jesus for a wonderful day with all our friends.

I met many wonderful people in Duluth last week. I learned a lot from the excellent teaching. And I had an opportunity to share about Glenhaven with several people.

Jessica and Stargazer placed 10th in the Mustang Makeover competition. They are all back here and doing well. The stories from the weekend have been awesome. Be sure to keep an eye on our "youtube" channel, Glenhavenvids. We will be posting video from the competition in the next few weeks.

Do you ever sit in awe and wonder at the majesty of God? Consider the myriad of galaxies, each one made up of billions of stars. Even our own sun almost 10,000 degrees Farenheit and God breathed it from his mouth. AWESOME! Do you ever contemplate the mystery of the cross? How does He love us, so? Why would He send His son to die? Would you or would I send our son or daughter to die for another? Maybe for a friend, but for an enemy? AMAZING! Do these thoughts ever make you, like David, burst into song? I am in awe when I consider all the works of His Hands!

It is incredibly challenging to show God to our kids in the midst of their circumstances. All of us here have a deep desire to lead each one of our kids first to a saving knowledge of Jesus and then to disciple them in His Life. Please pray that we are able to reach beyond their hurt and into their lives.

We have included a sentence about each of our kids so you be able to better pray for each one. We hope this helps.

One More Thing, but it is very important. . . This is typically our slowest time of year financially. We ask that you pray, not just for our finances, but more importantly for us, the staff.

PRAY:

That we will all see where we need to make corrections in our attitudes toward one another, in our use of resources, and in our individual relationships with God and His Son, Jesus.

Hello again. I know it has been over two weeks since our last prayer letter. Alot has been happening here. Last week was crazy. When we talked last we were getting ready to go to Colorado. The trip went great. Lots of good stuff spiritually for all involved. We were all drawn closer to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Your prayers were answered. It rained alot. We hiked wet and cold at times. People were sick. One young man had to go to the ER for a cut on the first night. But through it all God ministered to each of us, through nature, through teaching, and through each other. Thanks for your prayers.

When we returned it seemed that everything went crazy. Last week was extremely busy. Everything from moving the boys to dealing with staff issues. Thanks for praying.

Jeff Rice and his family have moved to NW Arkansas. He has taken a teaching position at a private christian school. He is in a non-traditional accrediting program. Please pray for him, Leigh Anne and their two sons.

Christina Manuwai has stepped up to the lead role in our school. She has alot to do in a short time.

School is starting so remember each of our kids as they start a new year: Matt, Christian*, Erika*, Jessyca, Brittany, Julie, Marissa, Javon, Justin, Anna, Stevie, & Hunter

* Christian will be starting college on Thursday.

* Erika has returned home to her mom.

Two more things: 1. Several staff have left the ranch or will be leaving us soon, all for diffeerent reasons. Please pray for the additional staff that will be needed to replace them. Pray for the stamina of the staff that remain as they accomplish the impossible. 2. We need house-parents for girls. The need is great and the workers are few.

Therefore His brothers said to Him, ‘Leave here and go into Judea, so that Your disciples also may see Your works which You are doing. For no one does anything in secret when he himself seeks to be known publicly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.’ For not even His brothers were believing in Him. So Jesus said to them, ‘My time is not yet here, but your time is always opportune. The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it, that its deeds are evil. Go up to the feast yourselves; I do not go up to this feast because My time has not yet fully come.’ Having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee.” (John 7:1-9)

Jesus was talking with his brothers in John chapter seven and they were trying to convince Him to go to Jerusalem. He told them that it was not His time. He also went on to say that it is your time. It’s always your time. And it is always our time, as well. What will we choose to do with our time? We hear that a lot from the pulpit, don't we? But do we really stop to consider how we budget our time? Does our time budget glorify the Father?

I'm thinking about all of this as we get ready to take our annual Colorado Backpacking trip into the wilderness. My day seems to be hurried and almost frantic. So I ask myself is God being glorified in my attitude, my planning, or my business?
Our theme for the hiking trip this year is the life of Jesus. I know God is glorified by His Son. My prayer for us is that God will be glorified in and through our lives on this trip as we continue to lead our young people to Him. Please pray for us as we spend our time this year with Jesus in the wilderness.

Please pray for each young person that they will be able to see Jesus as we hike with Him, as we talk about Him, and as we try to display His life in us. Please pray for safety and diligence of the adults on the hike. We need to be aware of everyone at all times. Pray for everyone's stamina and health. Pray for protection.

This week we are all back at the Ranch for the first time in weeks. No more camps. A few vacations left. School is getting ready to start. We're getting geared up for new residents. But first we have Colorado. We will be leaving on July 31st.

The girls will be going with us this year. We will be hiking in two separate directions. We will be hiking out of the wilderness together though. Everyone is looking forward to the trip this year. Please pray for the spiritual impact on each of our residents. Pray for logistics, travel, endurance, guidance, leadership, health, and our relationships with each other and our kids.

“Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met. Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.” (Matthew 6:33-34)

I spent the last 24 hours running into the bathroom. The real problem was that I was traveling with my church’s youth group to New Mexico from Arkansas. I did find that it was difficult to stay connected with God during those hours and I guess anyone would. I was praying but it sounded like this most of the time, "Oh please help me. I am so sick!" I guess we’ve all been there.

All of the kids and most of the staff are at Central Arkansas Youth Camp in Conway this week. Please pray for that camp. I’m at Centrifuge (youth camp) in Glorietta, NM with my daughter.

We need to begin praying for the Colorado trip. Two weeks from today we will be preparing to hike. Please pray for each of our residents and the impact that this trip will have on our relationships and their lives.

Are you experiencing god's peace today. I've got to tell you all that today was like a super Monday. You know one of those days that you don't even think about lunch until 1:30 or so. Everything is happening that can happen and sometimes even things that can't happen happen. Well, pray for us today and we will pray for you as well.
A couple of special things to consider: We need a security system for the brown house, since we have girls in there now AND the Colorado trip later this month.

All of our young men are there. Most of the girls are home for a visit, except for Brittney who is at camp also. House-parents are getting some much needed rest this week.

I got to visit with Patrick this week. He is at camp. He seems to be doing well. I talked with his mom and she indicated that he is talking with the band director at school. He wants to be part of that program. So keep on praying for Patrick.

Billy Jean and Ryan both returned to family last week. Please pray for their continued success and that they will remember the things that they learned here.

We had a planning meeting with the leaders of Glenhaven yesterday. We were blessed to be able to meet in a church in Little Rock. We had a great day. We spoke truth into each other’s lives. We challenged each other with ways to improve as a team and as leaders. We laughed together and yes, we even planned a few things. I think that everyone was encouraged. My prayer is that that attitude will spill over to each of their teams and make the Ranch better for our kids.

“It was one of those days”

Our principal, Jeff, and I teach a PE class here at the ranch. I don’t know that I’d say we teach PE, we do more teaching in the area of sportsmanship, not shooting your own (tearing down your own team members when they make a mistake or aren’t playing up to your standards), not quitting when things don’t go the way you want them to. Most days, this kind of teaching is required which can be frustrating and discouraging at times. But some days it’s as if almost everything is right with the world. The kids all have really good attitudes, they’re building each other up, they’re not showering each other with poison and death as they walk in the steps and speak the words of the people who have hurt them in the past. Some days overcoming is in the air. Yesterday’s PE class was one of those days.

The sun was shining, perfect springtime. They weren’t excited when I told them we would be doing a few rounds of sprints and push-ups before we started to play but they ran HARD and did really good looking push-ups. It’s no surprise to me that on these days when the kids aren’t out to make someone else appear lower than themselves they play wonderfully. This happened yesterday. I walked away from the field afterwards with a serene smile on my face because those moments are the places I build a little altar like Moses did after they crossed the Red Sea, stick a little post it note to remind me that this moment of victory and overcoming will come again for our kids, even if it’s as small as playing a good game of softball.

As I read over this little paragraph again there’s a part of me that says this is so small, why bother mentioning it? But then God inside me reminds me that little pieces of heaven coming to earth like that are the things that change the world. All it took was Jesus touching someone or speaking a gentle word to someone and we still talk about it 2,000 years later. That is eternal life.

I would like to tell you a story that leads to a prayer request this week. Bob Young, a neighbor, used to cut and bail our hay every summer. We would pick up the bails and split the hay with him. We did the same thing in his fields. Any time we had a cow problem or anything else we couldn’t figure out Bob and his wife Evelyn were always there. A long time ago Evelyn’s grandparents owned the property that is now Glenhaven. One evening after a long, hot day of haying Bob died. We were all very sad.

The very next day his sons were out here to finish the haying. They left their jobs and put their grief aside to finish their father's work. They said this is what Dad would want us to do. That was several years ago, but my eyes still get misty when I think of what Bob and Evelyn Young mean to Glenhaven and to me. Evelyn has since remarried. She and Darryl are still great friends of ours. My prayer request is for her family. Her son Jim died of cancer a couple of days ago. The funeral is tomorrow. Please remember Evelyn and Darryl Duncan and the Young family. They are very important to us.

In Matthew chapter 8 Jesus has just finished the Sermon on the Mount. He’s coming down the mountainside when he meets and heals a leper. Not unique that Jesus heals someone, but look at how he does it. “Jesus reached out and touched him.” He certainly did not have to touch the man, but He did. Can you think of anything more lacking in the life of a leper than human touch? Jesus meets each of us at the point of our greatest need. We have so much to learn don’t we?

Check out this quote from Truett Cathy & Ken Blanchard.

“There is a route to genuine and enduring satisfaction, but it flies in the face of this greedy, self-obsessed culture. It’s called generosity, and it involves freely giving our four most valuable resources – our TIME, TALENTS, TREASURES, and TOUCH – and receiving unimaginable riches in return.”

My point is that your prayers touch our lives in unimaginable ways so thanks for praying.

I did get my newsletter article written and each one of those young ladies had a change of heart. Each one humbled herself in her own time, or should I say “God's time.” “Coming to Jesus”, why does it take such struggle sometimes? You all keep on praying for those three and the rest of our kids, because just like all of us they’re not there yet.

Today's lesson is about how what we do affects those around us. I'm sitting in my office trying to think of something to write about for the June newsletter. I am distracted for a couple of reasons. ONE, I am dealing with three girls that decided that there way was the best this morning. And TWO, I had scheduled to attend my 6yr old daughter's kindergarten graduation/program. But I missed it. I think it must be a full moon or something. The battle is intense and I'm tempted to give in.

I really wanted to be there for my little girl today. So I'm tempted come down on these three with everything that I have. Tell them all how they messed up my day, but I'm not doing that. I'm listening to God. What do they need to hear from me? That's what I'm doing.

Pray for John & Lori their house-parents. Pray for Gina and myself as we try to lead each of them to the light.

And pray for my mind today. I need some clarity for the NL article and some serenity now! Ha! Ha!

I remember last week lamenting with you all about my prayer frailties and you must have taken it to heart, because I received lots of encouragement and understanding. You must have been praying because I do feel the goodness of God. Thanks!

Glenhaven was invited by the Brandon Burlsworth Foundation to attend Razorfest and the annual Red-and-White Football Game at the University of Arkansas on Saturday. We all had a great time, got a free T-shirt, and a pair of Brandon Burlsworth glasses. Champions for Kids hosted us and we received free food and drink the entire day. We got to go down on the field and be introduced before the game. Everyone had fun.

Money continues to trickle in as Our Heavenly Father cares for His kids here at GYR. Thank you for your prayers, notes of encouragement in this area, and the suggestions. We will prayerfully consider each one of them as we seek to be better stewards of His finances. God is good!

It consumes everything that I do. It is not worry. I am just bringing this issue before God at every turn. I often stop what I'm doing to pray for our finances with thanksgiving and praise. Why do I have to wait for a near crisis to pray like that? Is that true for you? I would like to think that I'm not alone in my humanness. I've prayed like this before, but do I do it on a daily basis? Unfortunately the answer is no. So I ask that you would pray for my diligence in prayer and my dependence upon God. I want to live dependent on Him and nothing else. I want to be able to say with Paul, 1 Corinthians 2:2 "For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.”

Glenhaven says hello! It is a beautiful spring day here in central Arkansas. If you need a little “Sonshine”just let us know and we'll send it your way! Let me tell you a quick story before we get into prayer requests.

I was riding my 4-wheeler around the ranch turning off lights and locking things up after workday last Friday when I decided to go to the food room and see what the work crew from Trinity Baptist in Texarkana had accomplished. They always do such incredible work when they're here. I was imagining the completed work when I noticed the Rec Room lights were still on. I thought, " They should be on," and my mind kind of froze. I decided to go on to the food room and worry about the Rec afterward. When my attention turned back to the road and driving, I saw that I was headed for a very deep ditch. The next thing that I knew I was flying off the 4-wheeler. I landed hard on my right shoulder and ended up curled up, in the ditch, below the 4-wheeler. I crawled up to the road, caught my breath, and called for help. The pain in my shoulder was intense and I couldn't stand up, so I just laid there and tried to laugh. But my shoulder and ribs hurt too much for that. Everyone came to my rescue and I'm ok. The doctor said that I have a slight separation in the shoulder and probably bruised the rotator-cuff in my right shoulder.

So say a quick prayer for Karen, my wife, this week she has to help me get dressed and put up with my infirmity. Which by the way requires alot of special attention be turned my way. She already thinks I'm milking this injury! I am not entirely sure that is a fair assessment.

We would like to ask that you continue to pray for our finances here. Like I said last week things are really tight. Donations continue to be a fraction of what is normal. We are now pulling money that we had designated for future projects in order to make payroll. (FYI: We will not use any monies that are donor designated.) These monies were set aside by us to save for future projects, but now we need them.

Residents: we have accepted two new residents, one young man & one young lady. This time of year is hard, they all want to go home and most will have to stay.

Houseparents: the Bakers, the Pitts, & the Cunninghams (who are filling in as girls HP's) Melody is doing much better and the Bakers are going to be grandparents.

Staff:

Mary, who has inflamed the area around her tailbone, the disc above her tailbone is bulging, and she needs healing.
Leigh Ann Rice and the baby. She is pregnant.
Scott’s sister Noe has non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma cancer, she’s on her 4th round of aggressive chemo treatments. The Manuwai's will be traveling to see her in Hawaii. Praise to God for the funding for this trip for them.Harding family, getting ready for their son’s wedding, the bride is working till the day before the wedding & must travel at the last minute, travel mercies for trip
Troy & Kim, there is spiritual attack that always exists when one tries to follow the leading of the Lord, logistics in packing & preparing to move, moving, and travel safety as well as their kids’ needs.

God’s provision of newer vehicles and monies to fix the old ones
Melody Baker’s continued recovery, she gets better each day
Wisdom and discernment of GYR leaders

Thank you for your prayers. I know that so often we pray for one another and we never find out the outcome. We are not able to rejoice with those that we pray for as God answers the calls of His people for them. We pray that this little email will keep in the know about things that you have prayed for on Glenhaven's behalf. If you ever miss something, please, let us know. We know you are praying and we want you to know the results and how much you help us when you pray.

The resident interviews - We interviewed one young lady yesterday, the other young lady will be next week. We will interview the young man tomorrow.
We hired the Swaffords as house-parents for girls. They will be here sometime after the 24th of May.
The interview went well with the Moyers and we will be flying them down here for a face-to-face interview in the next month or so.

Continue to remember the Colorado trips for boys and girls.
Please pray for the financial condition of Glenhaven. Today our bills are paid and payroll has been done for the 1st of the month. The problem is that we do not see the money coming in as it usually does during the first of each month. (Maybe people are paying their taxes?) The Father wants us to ask Him. So, in faith, we are asking Him and we ask that you join us in asking Him to release the treasures that He has in the hidden places for Glenhaven.

It is beautiful in Arkansas this time of year. It is probably beautiful most everywhere right now. So we pray for you and that you will be able to get out there and enjoy what God has created. Have a Blessed week!

What does it mean to be an intercessor? I got this definition from my daily devotion from Oswald Chambers. I got to tell you I have read My Utmost for His Highest for many years and I never cease to be amazed by what it says. It is as if i'm hearing it all for the first time. It always inspires me, encourages me, and kicks my rear-end at the same time.

An intercessor is one that is so closely identified with Him(Jesus) that they have His view concerning the people for whom they pray.

That is our prayer for you, that you will be so closely united with Jesus that you have His view concerning Glenhaven and its people. And that you will actually be in a state of worship as you pray.

Wow, we did make it through last week. Scott said that it would take the Glenhaven staff almost a year to accomplish the amount of work that was completed last week by the two groups. not to mention the relationships that were developed and deepened in the Lord. The food was amazing, the worship was amazing, and everything we did together was amazing. THANK YOU for your prayers.
We interviewed the Swaffords and the Moyers this week and are just taking our time to pray about their coming. We have gone for awhile waiting to hire only direct care staff. Now please pray that if one or both of these families are not right for Gods purposes here, He will reveal that to us.
We do have an on-time God, He's never late and He always provides for us and His kids at Glehaven. We do not know where the money is coming from to start possibly, two more houses. We do not need to see it. He has His provision in the hidden places. He does want us to ask Him. So we are asking that you would join us in asking our Heavenly Father for provision for two more resident homes to be staffed.
The McNeals returned and today Mark's dad passed out and they are at the hospital with him right now. He appears to be OK. The Dr's are checking for a broken rib and doing an evaluation of some new meds that he is taking.

To Our Faithful Brothers & Sisters

You will not believe what we are in the middle of this week. Wait how did you guess! Yes, that is right a mass of junior high kids! thirty-five to be exact and their fourteen high school, college, and adult helpers. It is Spring Break here at Glenhaven and we are hosting New Life Church's annual G-Life Myspace trip. Their youth pastor, Amber Noblit, faithfully leads them on these annual excersions. This is their second year with us. The kids work very hard to serve us and get the job done. They cook three meals a day for us. They have chapel every night for us. So I want all of you to say a special prayer of blessing, praise, and protection for the NLC crew.

Scott, director of operations, is working tirelessly to keep them all busy.
Scooter, water operator - Yesterday a malfunction caused us to deplete our water supply. Scooter worked all day to get it back online, which he did. Still I bet that boy's bunkroom has an odor. I am afraid to go over there. They did not get showers last night.
another youth group from a church in Nashville, AR will be here on Thursday for just a couple of days. Remember Scott & Scooter again, because this group size keeps growing. It has now doubled and currently sist at 30 People.

I'm just sitting here today Praising the name of Jesus. Yesterday we had the wonderful gift of Melody Baker, house-mom, at our staff meeting. You have been praying for her and she is doing so much better. She does not have all of her strength back yet, but she is almost there.
Several of the kids have been sick, but they seem to be all better.
It is a bit cool today but the sun is shinning bright and God is, as always, fathering us with a good hand! Guess what tomorrow Karen and I will have been married for 20 years. So say a special prayer for her. I mean she did put up with me for that long. She should have some kind of a reward.
We are definately taking the girls to Colorado this year. So begin to pray for that trip as well as praying for the boys trip. Pray that the hearts of all the young people will be tuned toward their Heavenly Father for the trip. Pray that we will have insight into each of their needs as we plan these trips.
The McNeals, house-parents, had to travel to Illinois for the funeral of a family member.
We are talking to a potential house-parent couple from Pennslyvania. Please be in prayer for the Moyer family and for our GYR staff during this interview process.
We are currently on the edge of developing another ministry within Glenhaven. As you may or may not know we have had young men and young women serve here as resident instructors. They provide an extra set of eyes and ears for the house. They provide ENERGY for the house. We have lived without this in our boys homes for a number of years now, even though we need them. In order to recruit new people for that role we need to develop a program where we provide spiritual mentoring as well as teaching them to help hurting people heal. a program where we teach the next generation what we do and we ensure that they are equiped, spiritually, to do it.

So it is vital that we drown this process in prayer. I am convinced that God would have us do this. We need prayer support as this thing develops. Pray for our wisdom and our insight into the needs of the young people that we will be ministering to.

Christ will live in us in a very real way

Prayer Warriors,

Galatians 2:20 (MSG) says, "Christ’s life showed me how, and enabled me to do it. I identified myself completely with him. Indeed, I have been crucified with Christ. My ego is no longer central. It is no longer important that I appear righteous before you or have your good opinion, and I am no longer driven to impress God. Christ lives in me. The life you see me living is not mine, but it is lived by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."

I read this today with my "Oswald Chambers" moment where he talked about pretense and deciet. We need to be giving all that to the Father. He will give us the righteousness we need. And so that is my prayer request this week... please pray that we will be able to identify those things in our lives, pretense and deciet. Pray that we will also be able to give those things to the Father.

We often like to pretend that we have it all figured out and after all we are relatively good people. Please help us identify where we pose for pretense and pretend to be real. Pray that Christ will live in us in a very real way.

It is a great day here at the ranch. It's cold, but the sun is shinning. It has been kind of quiet and that is always a blessing. We are praying that you are healthy, happy, and enjoying what God is doing in your life.

Please continue to pray for Melody Baker, house-mom. She is getting stronger.

Pray for Lori Cunningham. Lori works with the girls in the school, assists Jeff with school admin, and even helps me on occasion. She and John have been doing double duty covering as house-parents for the girls at Hidden Valley. She is sick today. They are both working hard and going above and beyond the call. Please pray the the Lord would grant them both a special measure of His grace during this time and cover them for the remainder of this time.

We do need house-parents for girls, as you can see. Please pray that we will have the wisdom to select the correct couple when they call.

Finally please pray for me that I will be wise and discerning with regard to our finances in the coming days. We all need to be wise stewards and not worry about this stuff, but when things get a little tight I do tend to do just that. I know that this is God's ministry. It always has been. He will provide for it. He always has, for almost 25 years. So why do I worry? It is just a human desire to have things where I can see them I suppose. So Pray for my wisdom and my rest in the provision of the Lord.

Home From Haysi, VA

We just pulled in a couple days ago from the Haysi, VA, mission trip/fun weekend in Nashville. For some

reason, the last 10 days have felt like a month. Maybe it was because so much happened.

The mission of our trip was to work with a team to put on a VBS for the community of Haysi. In addition to that, a small group of people from Oklahoma put on another VBS in the afternoons (the big one was in the evenings) at an apartment complex a little ways out of town. Our girls were involved in teaching stories, doing crafts, playing games, putting on skits,

and taking care of babies so the moms could go to the adult class. Lots of activity, lots of different people. In that, I kept seeing this one theme being played out again and again.

Not too long ago I listened to a man teaching (recorded from a Wild at Heart

retreat) about how people will view their lives as living on one of two ships – a cruise ship or a battleship (and this has been the topic of many conversations lately). They are either looking for their pillows to be fluffed and the food to taste just right or they’re reaching for more ammo because the enemy just won’t let up. Unfortunately, we all live on a battleship whether we want to come to terms with that or not. On our trip to Haysi, that reality was constantly before me. The beauty of God and the ugliness of satan waging war for the same territory – the hearts of all these people around me (and mine too). First of all, if you put 6 teenage girls (with their struggles and difficulties, like our kids have) in a really confined space for 10 days, you’re creating all kinds of opportunities for conflict. And that happened. The enemy wasted no time. The ugliness was evident in harsh words and hurt feelings, pain and division. But then … with some clear communication, taking responsibility, giving and receiving apologies and forgiveness – beauty stepped in. It came to reclaim the glory every time.

Then I looked at the faces of the kids that came to the church every night. Now of course I don’t know anything about them or what their stories are, except of what I learned of the culture of their community. So I’m only looking skin deep and I’m tellin’ you – I see beauty

everywhere. Little boys doing back hand springs in the grass and girls with pink bows in their hair. Then I talk to a mom and she tells me about multiple surgeries her son has been through and blood transfusions for her daughter (both under the age of 8). Or the kids whose behavior tell stories of the love and supervision they need at home but aren’t getting because of drugs (or whatever else). Yeah, the ugliness had to come in somewhere. In these cases it was hard to find beauty’s victory. And maybe it’s not there today but the war isn’t over yet and God told me Who wins in the end.

I am brutally reminded to stay tapped into the Source of bigger bullets than the ones coming at me.

Firefighters on staff serve double duty

I’d like to thank the Glenhaven staff members who are volunteer fire fighters. They fill a vital need on the Ranch as well as in our surrounding community.

About five years ago, we decided it would be appropriate to try and put in a fire station here at Glenhaven. At the time it took over twenty minutes just to drive to the Ranch from the nearest fire station, let alone get trucks started and gear on. Having equipment and firefighters on site seemed like the best answer for improving fire protection. Since its inception, the substation at Glenhaven has been a part of the Nmrod-Aplin Volunteer Fire Department. There have been almost 20 Glenhaven staff members that have gone through the training to be firefighters. Currently, there are 10 active members of the department at the Ranch. We also have a pumper truck and a brush truck garaged on the property.

A wonderful by-product of having firefighters on Ranch is the fact that several of them have gone on to train as first responders for medical emergencies. They are called upon regularly to deal with various medical situations with residents, staff and volunteers. It takes close to 30 minutes for ambulance personnel to arrive at the Ranch. Having medical assistance here is very valuable.

Glenhaven first responders also make calls out in the community for vehicle accidents and medical emergencies.

Looking ahead, we are hopeful about upgrading out trucks and equipment. Glenhaven is blessed to have a spring-fed pond on site that holds approximately 900,000 gallons of water year round. Our desire is to develop a water distribution system for firefighting using this resource. These improvements most likely will require funding from grants.

I am grateful for those staff members who participate on our fire department. Their willingness to serve the needs of Glenhaven residents is enhanced by their service as firefighters. They also serve as ambassadors from the Ranch to the community.

Remodeling the education process

Since May, a dedicated team of Glenhaven educators has been diligently meeting and planning, and planning and meeting, in expectation of the new school year. Our task was to re-write both the teacher and student policy manuals, which we’re just putting the finishing touches on. I’m excited about this coming school year because we’re implementing a new incentive system that will create opportunities for our students to take greater ownership in their education. But, more on those incentives later.

Along with policy and procedural changes, Glenhaven’s education program has also made some staff and physical changes. Jeff Rice, who’s been on staff since 2006, is our new principal. His leadership has been influential as we’ve designed our newest programs for the school. At the moment, Jeff is spending time working on one of the classroom buildings itself. He and his wife, Leigh Ann, have been painting, and we’ve had dedicated volunteers help with remodeling for the expected installation of a new SMART Board. In the months to come, there are plans to install new roofs on the classroom buildings, as well as remodel the kitchen. Your generous gifts have made these improvements possible, all of which serve to create a positive learning environment for our students.

Okay, so I promised earlier to tell you about our new incentive programs. This year students will carry around a daily report and have the opportunity to earn up to five “Ranch dollars” per class. We’ve adapted this system from another youth facility in Georgia who’s employed it to great effect. This “money” will be used to buy school supplies, participate in auctions, buy items back from lost and found, and probably best of all, buy tickets to end of term field trips. Perhaps as you consider how you can impact the life of one of our students, you’d considering sponsoring one of these trips. You might even have an idea for a trip we’ve not even thought of yet. Some ideas on the table are trips to Dickey Stevens Stadium for a baseball game, short hiking trips, community service projects, and many others.

As we enter into the 2009-2010 school year—has a whole decade passed so quickly—we appreciate your prayers and gifts. The impact you have in the lives of our young people is no less significant than those of us who teach. Thank you so much for all you do.

One of God's Little Nugget's

In the wee hours of the morning in May a new life came to Glenhaven Youth Ranch. It was the first colt born at Glenhaven and she was up and moving by the time the sun peaked over the horizon. Many of the staff and kids passed through the barn that morning to take a look at the youngster, Nugget, as well as a few of the ranch dogs. Goldie, the proud mama, was very accommodating as everyone stood and watched. Scooter, our equine specialist, made his way to the colt as I watched and took photos. The colt let him pet her as long as she stayed close to mom.

As time passed, Scooter decided to try something with the new colt. He wrapped his arms around Nugget and pulled her close. He then pulled Nugget away from her mother. As nugget struggled and kicked I expected Goldie to be mad so I readied my camera and prayed silently for Scooter’s safety. What I saw next almost made my eyes water. Instead of turning on Scooter, Goldie turned and nuzzled the new colt as if to say it’s okay, he won’t hurt you. This happened a few more times before we let mother and daughter have some alone time.

As I thought back on the spectacle that morning I thought about how we work with the kids that are sent to us here at Glenhaven. I thought about the similarities in our work and what Scooter did that morning for as God attempts to wrap his arms around these injured kids, the child will kick and fight against it. They have never, in many cases, felt anything like this before and they are scared. The adults at Glenhaven then turn to them as Goldie did with Nugget and let them know that it is okay. He will not hurt you or let you down. He just wants you to love Him back and He will guide you, feed you and take care of you.

What a wonderful position that we have been placed in. What a joy to see these kids come in on wobbly legs and to watch our Lord wrap his arms around them and comfort them. May God continue to bless this beautiful place with His presence.

God's Provision

Rick Paton, volunteer at Glenhaven, has been accepted into a Clinical Trial at NIH in Bethesda Maryland. He will be traveling there twice a year for five years. They will be observing and watching his tumors associated with his Neurofibromatosis Two or NF2. They will be watching the tumors on his spine and brain plus doing MRI’s twice a year.

His wife Dee will be allowed to travel with him. It is a wonderful blessing for them. He will be monitored for his NF2 very stringently and if any tumors begin to grow, they will remove them for him.

This study is a blessing from God. Please pray for the Paton's as they begin.

School's Out!!!

Marking the end of the school year at Glenhaven was our annual field day, and a full day of events it certainly was. New Life Church's "G-Life" youth group joined in on the fun, though I'm not quite sure they knew what they were in for!

After a short devotion (centered around the day's memory verse James 3 :17) the kids embarked on an extensive obstacle course involving nothing more important than a huge slip-n-slide.

Following lunch, some friendly "tugging" ended everyone up on the wrong side of muddy!

Everyone cleaned up in the creek just in time for our "staff -vs- kids" softball game. Our fearless director Dwayne pitched for the staff, while ranch youth pastor Jamie Coggins lobbed for the kids. Many swings and laughs later, the staff emerged victorious.

The day finished off with a heart warming chapel where Glenhaven said goodbye to a graduated resident, as well as two very valued staff members. Amber from G-life encouraged us all with a message of God's grace and power, which posed the searching question, "Are you standing in the way of receiving it?"

Sprintime arrives at Glenhaven

Springtime has fully enveloped the Ranch, and following an unprecedented amount of rain for this time of year, greenery has exploded back to life following the somber cold months of winter. We have a very special addition to the plethora of new life abounding at Glenhaven—a new colt, Miss Golden Nugget, born during the early hours of Monday, May 18^th.

What a treat for Ranch residents to see and interact with Nugget. She is doing well during her first days in her big new world. She is quite the “magnet” of interest and has frequent visitors. Scooter, our Equine Director, brought her and mother, Goldie, over to the office after lunch today. While Goldie grazed on the lawn beside the office, Nugget got a lot of attention from young and old alike.

What a blessing the Lord has bestowed on us by sending Nugget at this time. We thank Him for springtime and the new life that comes with it. We thank Him for the special blessing of having a new colt in our midst.

The Dream

THE DREAM of providing a home for at-risk youth has endured since Glenhaven opened its gates in 1984. Today, Glenhaven consists of 2 campuses spread over 190 acres in the beautiful Ouachita National Forest in Central Arkansas.

Glenhaven is a place of serenity and beauty, insulated from the adverse outside influences of the world. As the cattle quietly graze in the pastures, the resident homes and education facilities are a hub of learning and activity. It is within this refuge that boys and girls come to terms with the pain that they have endured and discover the hope and healing that offers a rich and satisfying future.
